USE THE BLIND CARBON COPY

Surely, an important part of your workday is dedicated to email. For this reason, you should know how to use it in a responsible way.

The sections CC (with copy) and BCC (blind carbon copy) are part of the mail header and it’s essential that you keep them in mind, especially when your send emails to several users.

You can use the usual destination space when you write an email to a person or a group in which all people (or almost all) know each other or, although you don’t know, you need to interact or get in touch. The copy section (CC) is used to inform another person about the conversation; it’s not necessary that he/she takes part (although, of course, he/she can do it). In this case, the addresses are visible to everyone. But, the blind copy (BCC) is used to send a message in which the email addresses remain hidden; something very useful when you send emails to many people who do not know each other at all. For example, an email to all your contacts informing them that you have changed your phone number, a newsletter, or a notification to all your customers.

Why shouldn’t you put the email addresses in a public way?

It is a legal and ethical problem. Legal because it violates data protection regulations. The email address is personal data and, therefore, cannot be shared without the express consent of the user. It’s also an ethical problem, because -simply- you should not provide the email of other users.

How do I use blind copy?

You can copy the list of emails (comma separated), find the BCC place and paste them. Nothing happens for leaving the section “To” blank, the email is sent to all the users you have entered in the blind carbon copy. And, although they cannot interact with each other, they can always answer you.
