“The liar if he can’t convince you, tries to confuse you.

Telephone scams (or Vishing) are becoming increasingly common. It is a way for cybercriminals to obtain personal data, which they can then use in virtual scams, such as impersonating us on social networks, taking out loans or other means of financing under our name or accessing applications that we use. And this can affect us both personally and professionally.

Therefore, we would like to give you the following recommendations:

  • Use common sense. Would you give your personal, professional or bank details to a stranger on the street? Why do it over the phone then?
  • The golden rule remains to be wary of any unusual communication and to “double check”. To get out of doubt, we should contact the original contact, by other official means. Or if it is a supposed acquaintance, whom the cybercriminal is impersonating, the easiest thing to do is to ask a question that only that person should know how to answer. For example, if it is a distant cousin asking for money, ask what game you played as a child. The question in itself is going to be embarrassing, but if it is a stranger who is trying to swindle us, he will not risk answering and will hang up on us.
  • Do not do anything you are asked to do until you have checked the above. If the call seems suspicious or even “hidden number” or “unknown” appears on the screen, do not pick it up. If you have done so and the conversation is out of the ordinary, hang up directly.
  • Check the Internet to see if the number from which the call was made has been used in other scams. Sometimes you can find forums, in which other affected usershave warned about this contact.
  • Currently in any mobile device, we can find a button to block contact, and in video call platforms even the option to report/denounce. This will not prevent them from trying again through another phone number, but at least we will have contained the first scam attempt.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We remind you again that if you have the slightest suspicion that you are suffering a security problem or the certainty that it is a cyber-attack, do not hesitate to communicate it to the IT department, so that they can advise you appropriately. And on a personal level he reports the cyberattack to the police authority.
