Digital disconnection is a right we all have, but which is rarely fulfilled. It implies disconnecting from technology from time to time and being able to enjoy the environment around us, without interruptions that involve a lot of thinking or that can change our mood.

But digital disconnection is not only a recommendation for mental health reasons. It is also a matter of security.

Surely many of us have seen people at airports, on planes and trains, on the beach, on excursions or sightseeing tours, hanging from their phones or computers. And we are not referring to teenagers who do it for leisure or boredom, but to adults who to some extent find it difficult to disconnect from work, even when they are on a well-deserved vacation.

The devices (computer, mobile, tablet, etc.) are mere containers, so what we are really taking on the road is the company’s information.

Using corporate devices far from what is considered the security environment of the company or our home is already a risk in itself. But if we also use them in public places, where we can easily connect to unknown WIFIS, expose ourselves to the risk of other people nearby obtaining confidential company information that they should not know when they hear us talking on the phone, or even have our belongings stolen, the security risk increases considerably.

The recommendation for these vacations is that, Before taking a company device with us, even if it is assigned to us, we should consider whether it is necessary and authorized for us to use it while traveling. We must also understand that if it is not allowed by the company, we would be doing it under our personal responsibility. So we will have made a lot of progress in work issues during the vacations and demonstrated commitment and high productivity, but if the device is stolen or lost, we may have a serious security problem both we and our company, and we will have caused it consciously. If it is necessary to use it, for urgent matters and because our boss expressly asks us to do so, let’s always do it in a safe and discreet place (hotel room, family home or tourist apartment), never in public places.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We remind you again that if you have the slightest suspicion that you are experiencing a security problem or theft/loss of a company device, do not hesitate to communicate it to the IT department, so that they can advise you appropriately. And on a personal level he reports the cyberattack to the police authority.
