“Would you give your house keys to a stranger?”

Right? So why do we get to use passwords similar to these:

  • 12345678
  • Bart, Lisa and Maggie
  • 03/04/1977
  • Password
  • Snoopy 1950

Just as, if we had to choose a lock for our front door, we would choose the one that gives us total security, confidence and is not easy to be forced by a criminal, the same should be done with passwords.

We are still unaware that passwords are our digital entrance key to our private life or work environment. That is why sometimes, we do not apply adequate protection.

Here are some tips on how to choose good passwords so that no cybercriminal can take control of your life and digital identity:

  • Choose passwords between 8 and 14 characters.
  • Do not use only letters and/or numbers, use also symbols (/;@$&?* or similar).
  • Don’t be obvious, because these passwords are the easiest to discover, such as 12345678 and Password.
  • Do not choose anything that identifies you, such as children’s names, pets, birth dates, postal addresses, etc.
  • Separate personal passwords from professional passwords and use different passwords for different technologies (e-mail, online stores, social networks, applications, etc.).
  • Remember to change passwords periodically (between 30 and 90 days). Even the most secure passwords, if they have been in use for a long time, can be discovered and used.
  • Do not communicate them to nobody. And when we say nobody, we mean NOBODY. Neither support technicians, nor direct managers, nor colleagues or friends should know and use your passwords. Because they may not use them with the same level of protection as you or access information that they should not know.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We remind you again that if you have the slightest suspicion that you are suffering a security problem or the certainty that it is a cyber-attack, do not hesitate to communicate it to the IT department, so that they can advise you appropriately. And on a personal level he reports the cyberattack to the police authority.
