CRYPTOVIRUSES AND ENCRYPTION RANSOMWARE CAN BE YOUR WORST NIGHTMARE (AND NOT ONLY ON HALLOWEEN)

In 74% of cases, viruses and ransomware are installed on systems via malicious e-mails. In 90% of cases, they cause serious damage to the activity of a company or entity, even paralyzing it completely.

Cryptoviruses or encryption ransomware are cyberattacks that, as their name suggests, encrypt and make all the files we have on our devices inaccessible. Once this action is confirmed, the cybercriminal to whom these malware belong, requests a monetary ransom in exchange for the decryption key.

The cybercriminal only has to impersonate the identity of a legitimate sender (acquaintance, colleague, senior manager, customer, supplier, bank, public administration, etc.), which allows him/her to circumvent certain technical security measures and infect a company by deceiving the user.

Therefore, the success of this type of cyber-attacks is due to people making a mistake, either by clicking on a fake link or downloading and opening an attachment that may be infected.

How can we react to this?

  • Be alert to possible suspicious emails, communications and even Whatsapp and SMS that we may receive and that are not usual.
  • Cut off communication at the slightest hint of suspicion that the person you are talking to may have impersonated your contact or have bad intentions.
  • Confirm by other means the content of the conversation or communication (e.g., by calling the actual sender).
  • Communicate these and other technical problems we may experience to the IT department, as soon as possible. For example, there are certain types of viruses that can make our computer run slow, distort the image or do things automatically.
  • Request a forced change of password to the IT department, if we believe that it could have been compromised, because we have provided it or introduced it in the web indicated in the mail.

WE WISH YOU A HAPPY HALLOWEEN! 🎃
