INTERNET LAYERS:

In today’s TIP we want to explain to you how vast and deep the Internet is, so that you understand why we are not aware of how dangerous cybercriminals are, simply because we never see them physically and they are hidden behind a computer screen that allows them total anonymity.

SURFACE WEB: As its name indicates, it is the visible or superficial part and it supposes only 4% of the Internet and is where all Users usually browse on a daily basis. This part is composed of all the pages and platforms that are easily accessible through the Internet and that are available to any User who wants to consult them through Google or other search engines (called indexed). For example: online stores, social networks, newspapers and magazines, informative websites, company and entity websites, video platforms such as Youtube, etc.

DEEP WEB: It is the hidden part and represents 90% of the Internet. Here we find pages and platforms restricted by different levels of protection. They are considered private and not public, so that sometimes it is not possible to access them through search engines such as Google (called, not indexed) and, almost always we are obliged to activate security systems and verification of our identity, as persons authorized to access (VPN, double authentication factor, specific passwords or digital certificates). For example: employee intranets to consult payroll, management, processing and consultation platforms for clients, patients or citizens, internal or departmental folders, etc.

DARK WEB: It is the dark or illegal part and represents 6% of the Internet. The cybercriminals try to steal our personal data or the information of the company or entity we work for, attacking the pages, platforms and Users of the SURFACE, as well as the DEEP WEB. The stolen information cannot be resold publicly to other fraudsters and criminals, so they have to hide in this part of the Internet and create here online stores selling data that allow them to maintain their anonymity and are difficult to track by law enforcement authorities. But in this part of the Internet there is not only stolen data (personal data, passwords, images, bank cards, etc.), but information trafficking coexists with online trafficking in drugs, weapons, people, violent pornography and other illegal activities. That is why to move in the DARK WEB requires extensive computer knowledge, it is not accessible through legal search engines like Google and in some countries the mere browsing out of curiosity to know what is there, and could be considered a crime (eg USA).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Therefore it is very important the collaboration within the company or entity for which we work and also citizen collaboration, when communicating and reporting all types of cyber attacks or scams that we may suffer or with which we find ourselves surfing the Internet. This will allow a better work of the IT Department, and the proper progress of police investigations.
